Known System Issues and Outages

You can follow ongoing system issues and outages for many of these tools on the .

Be Prepared

A little preparation can keep a Canvas outage from becoming a course emergency.

Keep Contact Information

Students should keep a copy of the syllabus with the instructor's email address and other important course information.

Plan Alternate Communication

Faculty should identify Weber State email as the primary alternate communication method in the syllabus.

Keep Accessible Copies

Faculty should maintain copies of important course materials, assignments, exams, rubrics, and records outside Canvas. Regular exports can provide an additional backup.

Canvas Course Backup Reminders

Canvas may display a backup reminder on your Dashboard when course content or grades have not been exported in the past 60 days. These reminders encourage good backup practices, but exporting your course or grades is optional, not a university requirement. You can dismiss a reminder for seven days.

Canvas provides two different export options:

  • Course Content: Downloads a course export package that can be imported into another Canvas course. This is useful for preserving course materials, but it is not a readily accessible offline copy of your assignments, quizzes, or other instructional content.
  • Student Grades: Downloads a CSV file of your course gradebook, which can be opened in spreadsheet software. Store files containing student information securely in accordance with university data protection requirements.

Important: These exports do not include student assignment submissions and should not be considered complete backups of all course activity. We recommend maintaining accessible copies of critical instructional materials outside Canvas so they remain available during an outage.
