Congratulations to our Fall 2026 STAR Grant Recipients!
This October two Sustainability Teaching, Application, and Research (STAR) Grants were awarded. The selection committee awarded Dr. Sarah Brew funds for "Last Ice: A Documentary Film on Wild Ice in the Climate Crisis." Brew is an Assistant Professor of Theatre: History & Education. Her project seeks to work with students to "film, edit, and produce a 10-15 minute documentary film (entitled "Last Ice") about the vanishing practice of wild ice skating on frozen lakes as one vantage point into the climate crisis and its intersection with cultural memory."
The selection committee also awarded a STAR grant to Dr. James Cohen for "Exploring the Impact of Climate Change on Plant Phenology in Northern Utah and Adjacent Regions." Cohen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Botany & Plant Ecology, and plans to engage students to comprehensively investigate the impact of climate change on plant phenological processes such as leafing out and flowering in 60 species across northern Utah.
SPARC is glad to support the work of students and faculty engaged in sustainability, and we look forward to the second round of applications in Spring 2027.

Sustainable Clubs Highlight: Zero Waste
The ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø Energy & Sustainability Office’s Zero Waste Athletics program has been in full swing this fall semester with record numbers of recyclables collected at football games. Zero Waste Athletics (also known as Wildcats Go Zero Waste) helps students get volunteer hours while educating football and basketball fans about Weber State’s recycling and composting policies.
So far this football season, volunteers have helped recycle 165.44 lbs of plastic bottles and aluminum cans, about 4,136 bottles/cans. To get involved in ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø’s waste reduction initiatives and help us reach our goal of 50% waste diversion by 2030, sign up to participate in the last Zero Waste Athletics game of the season on November 21st from 12:30-5:00 pm via .
Additionally, if you’d like to make a greater impact working towards ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø’s Zero Waste Goals, you can apply for the Zero Waste Coordinator position. This position leads ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø’s Zero Waste Athletics Program and assists with the implementation of the zero waste and green purchasing goals in ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø’s Sustainability Plan.
Register for Spring SUS Courses
Looking to gain skills that empower you to solve real-world challenges both at home and globally? When registering for the upcoming semester, look out for classes tagged with the SUS attribute!
Sustainability-inclusive courses teach you how healthy human societies are built and supported across physical, social, and economic systems. Whether you're in business, healthcare, science, or the arts, SUS classes give you a competitive edge for your future career. Currently, 65% of ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø departments offer one or more SUS courses—making it easier than ever to add sustainability to your degree.
There are 135 sections of Spring 2027 courses carrying the Sustainability Designation (SUS). We hope you'll take another or consider taking one for the first time. Click here to see the complete list. Registration opens the week of November 9. You can find descriptions of all the courses for Spring 2027 here.
As Provost Leslie Durham notes, “When students understand how sustainability shapes decision-making in fields such as science, technology, performing arts, healthcare, business, and education, they are better prepared to lead with insight and ingenuity in the communities they serve.”
Why Take a SUS-Attributed Class?
- Real-World Skills: Learn to recognize positions of power and gain practical tools to tackle modern environmental, social, and economic challenges.
- Interdisciplinary Learning: See how sustainability directly connects to your major—from tech and education to healthcare and design.
- Drive Local Impact: Contribute ideas and practices that support ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø’s goal to become carbon neutral by 2040.
How to Find SUS Courses:
When registering, filter your course search by the Sustainability (SUS) attribute under the High-Impact Educational Experiences (HIEE) options!

Running Up For Air
Do you love to run and clean air to run in? Sign up to run the 2027 race to challenge your speed, endurance, and winter skills, while supporting clean air and ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø’s Sustainability Practices and Research Center (SPARC).
is a collection of endurance events to empower organizations like SPARC, which are actively working toward clean air solutions. A portion of the proceeds from the Malans run will directly support SPARC and the City of Ogden’s sustainability efforts from February 19 – 20.
RUFA offers 3-, 6-, 12-, or 24-hour options for teams or individuals to climb Malans Peak as many times as possible in the selected timeframe. The race starts and finishes at the 29th Street Trailhead (29th Street and Buchanan Ave, Ogden), with each “lap” ending at Malans Peak.
Participants not only raise funds for local clean air stewards, but also learn science-based material about the importance of healthy air. All events are conducted with a minimal footprint philosophy.
Given the time of year, the route is almost entirely snow-covered. This is winter running at its finest!
