Professor John D. Kelly

Presidential teaching excellence award recipient 2023

Welcome — I’m Professor John Kelly

I’ve been hooked on cars since I was seven, when my dad overhauled the engine in his 1967 Jeep Wagoneer and let me “help” by cleaning every bolt and small part. We spent open shop nights together at our Brigham City high school, where I watched him get an old World War II truck running again after others had failed. Later I learned to maintain diesel tractors and farm trucks on my uncle’s farm. Those experiences taught me I could accomplish difficult tasks, and that confidence is what I try to give every student.
My professional career started in August 1979 in a high school work-study job at George’s OK Tires, an independent Goodyear retailer, where I earned my first NIASE (now ASE) certifications. An AC-Delco class at the GM Training Center in Salt Lake City, taught by Steve Stuart, made me decide I wanted to be a teacher. After 12 years as a technician at independent shops and GM dealerships in Utah and California, I started teaching at Weber State as an adjunct on January 6, 1990. I joined full-time on July 1, 1991. It was a dream come true. I now have 47 years in the automotive industry.

What you can expect in my classes

I’ve made my share of diagnostic and repair mistakes over the years, and I want to help you avoid them. I teach the manufacturer’s way, not shortcuts that lead to comebacks. My favorite class to teach is basic electrical for incoming freshmen because electronics are everywhere, and your excitement gives me hope for our industry’s future.
You’ll learn hands-on on real vehicles in our xEV training facility through five dedicated hybrid and EV classes. Each year you take two semesters of classes, then work in an automotive shop or with a related employer over the summer. We prepare you for ASE certification by completing the required ASE Education Foundation tasks in our classes and connecting you directly with employers. Almost all of our graduates already have multiple job offers. Graduates have gone on to work as service technicians, technical support specialists, field service engineers, educators, curriculum developers, service managers, and small business owners.

Recognition and outreach

I was honored to receive Weber State’s 2023 Presidential Teaching Excellence Award. I hold ASE Master Automobile Technician certifications (L1, L3, and L4) and have served on ASE test committees. My son Jacob and I co-developed the , and I founded Vibrate Software in 1993.
Learn with me anytime on at @weberauto, where I post the videos I use in my classes. Working technicians can join our five-day Hybrid & EV Boot Camp (weber.edu/evtraining), which has trained hundreds of educators, engineers, fleet managers, and technicians since 2019.
